PlayingKiwi
Kiwi music for Kiwi stores, licensed directly from independent musiciansPlay local and save on in-store music!Note: PlayingKiwi is not available yet!
How It Works
PlayingKiwi is like Spotify for business use, except it only contains music fully owned by Kiwis.PlayingKiwi works with independent music makers to license their music for business use. You can use PlayingMusic for background music at retail stores, restaurants, cafes, gyms, barber shops, spas, offices, waiting rooms, entertainment centres, and other types of business locations. We offer high-quality music at lower prices by skipping the complex royalty collection mechanism required for international music rights. You'll get a break from the global pop charts, and your customers may soon be championing the really good indie music of Aotearoa!
For Artists
Artists keep full ownership of their music. Reach new fans and get paid quarterly. You will need to send APRA a request to authorise a direct license (We'll explain and help).
For Stores
Decorate your stores with great background music that's already licensed for you! Note: You still need a OneMusic License for live performances, DJs, or to play music from other platforms.
Music curation
Playlists for different types of businesses, genres, moods, and demographics. Curated by local musicians who know the independent music scene.
Play It Legally
In New Zealand, businesses need permission from music owners to legally play their music in a commercial setting. But music rights are complex. To play music publicly, 3 types or rights are involved: Publishing Rights, Recording Rights, and Public Performance Rights. See this article by APRA AMCOS for more information. In New Zealand, OneMusicNZ provides a single license that allows businesses to play most music around the world. As a result of legal complications, different commercial music providers exist for different business needs. Most background music providers in New Zealand work with overseas catalogues or music labels. They provide custom solutions for businesses at high prices or require the business owner to purchase an extra license from OneMusic, which typically costs $60 to $100 per month. One of the most affordable options on the market for small businesses is SoundTrack. For a 50 square-metre cafe, it would cost $103 per month to use the SoundTrack Starter plan. As this is a significant cost for small businesses, many attempted to play music illegally and were subsequently contacted by OneMusic representatives. Unfortunately, this effort from OneMusic to support music makers still doesn't help independent artists, as most commercial music suppliers choose to work with major record labels for convenience.
Our Difference
While other commercial music suppliers work with major music labels and overseas catalogues, PlayingKiwi works with local music crafted by independent artists. This means you have a huge variety of styles unavailable elsewhere and save hundreds of dollars on in-store music!

We want to put together all-Kiwi playlists for every occasion that shop owners love more than the overseas options, can you help?We are looking for Kiwi musicians and bands who have music with full ownership (or if all parties on the split sheet agree). That is to say, both 100% of the Publishing Rights and 100% of the Master Rights are locally-owned. The music must be suitable for playing to the public (clean edits). The agreement with PlayingKiwi allows your music to be used in New Zealand businesses as background music and not in advertisement or other products. It will be non-exclusive, meaning that you can still license your music to other clients and do what you wish as usual. The direct licensing agreement is renewed annually until either party wishes to terminate. If you're interested, please email Amy, aka Raging Flowers, at [email protected].If you already know Amy, then please let her know that you are interested in starting the conversation, otherwise please provide the following:• Artist/band information and how you or your music's connected to New Zealand
• Evidence that you are the artist you're claiming
• Send a few songs and suggest locals shops or types of shops you see your music being played at.
